NEUROPLASTICITY: REWIRING THE BRAIN AFTER TRAUMA

Discover innovative therapeutic approaches that engage and enhance the brain’s innate neuroplasticity

“I believe in the inherent goodness of people and the deep power within all of us. I’m dedicated to healing the world, one mind at a time.”

Lisa Wimberger

“Trauma disconnects us us from ourselves, from others, even from our spirituality so that we end up being very isolated. But healing from trauma is always possible.”

Dr. Diane Poole Heller

WHY DOES UNRESOLVED TRAUMA DISRUPT HEALING?

In early childhood, the human brain is wired to remember (and learn from) profound experiences.

And when we suffer trauma or less-than-ideal caregiving, the memory (of the event itself) imprints onto the amygdala—a part of the brain’s limbic system. That means we also store trauma through fragments of the five senses—sight, sound, smell, taste or touch.

Even a seemingly insignificant detail of the experience can also activate emotional and behavioral responses to protect us––including the fight, flight, freeze or fawn response.

Unsurprisingly, we carry these imprints throughout our lives as both explicit and implicit memories… and they can affect our thoughts, emotions, physical and mental health…even our adult relationships.

The challenge in treating trauma and helping people restore a sense of safety—is that implicit memories, when activated in the present—feel like the threat is immediate.

As a result, the stress response stays over-activated, where the brain searches for danger, even when it’s not there.

What’s worse? When we’re not able to calm or down-regulate our nervous system, long-term exposure to stress hormones can disrupt body processes and put us at an increased risk for a variety of physical, behavioral and mental health challenges.

Because trauma presents physically and behaviorally, we must work to treat the body and mind together.

Yet, many traditional therapeutic methods focus mainly on the relationship between our thought and behaviors––overlooking how we can utilize neuroscience principles in clinical work to accelerate healing and post-traumatic growth.

And even if we did learn rudimentary neurobiology, most of us haven’t been taught how to apply the theory and science to our everyday clinical work.

That means we might miss the opportunity to “clinicalize” or “operationalize” a process that helps the brain take advantage of its innate neuroplasticity to adapt and learn new behavior patterns and ways of thinking.

What if we could improve our brain’s innate neuroplasticity to accelerate post-traumatic growth and healing?

Throughout our lives, the brain has a tremendous ability to modify, change and adapt both its structure and function in response to experiences.

No matter when (or what kind) of trauma we’ve experienced, it’s possible to rewire parts of our brain––even into late adulthood.

With the right kind of training, skills and sustained practice, we can rewrite self-sabotaging patterns, reduce chronic stress and prime the brain for lasting change.

And the more we work with the brain’s innate neuroplasticity, the easier and more familiar it becomes to restore safety and improve resilience.

When we apply a “whole-person” approach with trauma-informed care, we can increase self-awareness, improve mental health outcomes and accelerate growth and healing—for ourselves and for our clients.

“Neurosculpting is a science-based, potent way to tap into the hidden parts of your brain that drive you. It’s elegant, simple and doesn’t take much time.”

Dave Asprey, Author

When treating the whole person, we must…

“Working with Lisa Wimberger on neuroplasticity has helped me so much to unlock mental aspects of my mind that ease the pain of things I’m going through.”

Our next topic in the monthly training series…

NEUROPLASTICITY: REWIRING THE BRAIN AFTER TRAUMA

Discover innovative therapeutic approaches that engage and enhance the brain’s innate neuroplasticity

Led by Dr. Diane Poole Heller and Lisa Wimberger

Here’s what we’ll cover in the next 6 months

Includes client demonstrations, practical tools and strategies you can integrate into your clinical practice to strengthen your skills and improve your effectiveness when working with people who have experienced trauma.

All LIVE monthly sessions meet online for 90 minutes on
Tuesdays at 1 pm ET / 11 am MT / 10 am PT

MONTH 1: November 8, 2022

The Role of the Vagus Nerve in Nervous System Regulation

In our first session, we’re introduced to Jacques—a client raised by a narcissistic and emotionally abusive father. Eventually, Jacques’ father cut off ties with all his relatives, including Jacques. As a way of coping, Jacques responded by developing symptoms of stress, dissociation and addictive overeating.

Over the next 6 months, you’ll follow Jacques’ progress in his healing journey—as Lisa shows you how to apply exercises, tools and techniques. Watch over her shoulders as she pauses and debriefs steps in the demo to explain how to integrate theory and processes in a therapeutic environment.

During this month’s training, you’ll learn more about the neurobiology behind the stress response and how it relates to social functioning. We’ll also introduce simple practical exercises that balance the nervous system, increasing our stress threshold, particularly in response to anger. Finally, we’ll show you how to create a “daily vagal conditioning” plan that reinforces new patterning and empowers us to self-govern our nervous system.

MONTH 2: December 6, 2022

The Prefrontal and Limbic Brain Relationship in Self-Regulation

We continue to follow Jacques as he progresses in his healing journey. In this month’s session, watch as Lisa and Jacques work together to create an action plan that helps Jacques recognize and identify ways that his limbic system responds to stress—by becoming more aware or conscious of what’s happening in the moment, Jacques develops a better understanding of his thoughts, feelings and body sensations, an important first step in regulation.

In this month’s training, you’ll also gain a deeper understanding of the neurobiological relationship between our limbic system and the prefrontal cortex of the brain. Learn tools and techniques that engage and stimulate this dynamic system to foster a sense of internal safety, manage emotions and become more responsive (instead of reactive).

MONTH 3: January 10, 2023

The Path to Intentional Self-Regulation

When we understand our position within the Stress Response Spectrum, we can become more aware of our body’s responses, warning signals, triggers and secondary alerts, related to stress. Most importantly, it provides valuable information for creating an individualized self-care plan, which is an essential requirement for long-term sustainability and progress in trauma recovery.

During this month’s session, we continue with Jacques’ case—as he learns how to use a self-diagnostic tool (the Self-Regulation Wheel)—and shifts from feeling disempowered to learning how to manage stress and increase his sphere of self-control.

In the recorded training, Lisa will show you how to use the Self-Regulation Wheel to create an action plan for yourself or clients that creates agency and calms the nervous system. You’ll also learn various top-down and bottom-up exercises and practices.

MONTH 4: February 14, 2023

The SCARF Model: Identifying Patterns to Strengthen Social Engagement

Much of our emotional dysregulation comes from the way we interpret social connection, including cues and relational experiences. Our case study example, Jacques, developed severe social dysregulation from trauma as a result of his narcissistic father’s behavior and actions.

In this session, we see Jacques further develop relational awareness and understanding of trauma responses—as he learns how to identify relational stressors and interpret social cues using the SCARF Wheel.

The training will also cover how emotional dysregulation can affect us all, socially and relationally. Lisa will show you how to incorporate the SCARF Model—another self-diagnostic tool—to stimulate a healthier functioning prefrontal cortex.

MONTH 5: March 28, 2022

A Whole-Brained Approach to Emotional Regulation

In this session, we see Jacques further progress in his healing journey, as he learns how to achieve greater balance and fulfillment in his life. We watch as Lisa teaches him an advanced, top-down approach to use when his addiction patterns or social dysregulation become activated.

During this month’s training, you’ll further explore how to stimulate the brain’s innate neuroplasticity so that it’s primed for lasting, permanent change instead of defaulting to old, unproductive stress responses.

MONTH 6: April 18, 2023

Neurosculpting® Wordplay & Somatic Identification for Stress Regulation

We carry subconscious associations about ourselves, our relationships and the world around us—which can keep us locked in negative stress patterns. And the words we use to communicate with others provide clues and insights into our (positive and negative) emotional states and behavioral patterns.

In the final client demo session, Jacques learns how to recognize and identify subtle behaviors, word clues and belief systems—key indicators of what’s keeping him trapped in stressful patterns.

During this final training, Lisa shows you how to unlock the subconscious associations that could activate a threat response and create new experiences and meaning instead.

You’ll learn how to accelerate the healing process by teaching clients how to “listen” to their body’s physical responses as a guide to what they’re ready to process next, empowering them to prevent the threat response before it activates.

Don’t miss your chance to join us for this unique monthly membership and learn from two experts on trauma and neuroplasticity!

Frequently Asked Questions

How can we help you?

No, you do not. While most of the people who join the Therapy Mastermind Circle membership are both novices and experienced practitioners, we do sometimes have non-therapists join us as we explore a variety of in-depth topics on a monthly basis.

This topic is highly relevant for life coaches, bodywork practitioners, first responders, medical professionals, teachers/educators and other mental health and behavioral professionals who work with clients and patients in a professional or clinical setting—and who need additional tools and skills to help anyone struggling to process trauma.
