“If we wanted to change the world and our relationships, the fastest way to change it would be to heal attachment.”
Dr. Diane Poole Heller
Have You Ever Worked With A Couple In Crisis— Yet Even After Months, They’re Not Making Real Progress?
Too many of our clients come to us only when they’re at a breaking point.
Adults, who have experienced early relational trauma, can find their unresolved attachment wounds rise to the surface—particularly in their intimate relationships.
This can cause a communication breakdown and can result in years of long-term unhealthy behavioral patterns.
So they suffer needlessly (and silently) in broken and disconnected relationships.
Unsurprisingly, by the time clients come to you—feeling distressed, angry, hurt or lonely—they’re having a difficult time accessing the parts of their brain that are oriented towards self-awareness and devoted to connecting to others.
That makes it even more difficult for them to trust others and find language to ask for help when they need it.
No matter how long you’ve been in practice—relationship therapy is hard.
When you’re working with two people in a dysfunctional relationship, the stakes feel even higher. You must get it right.
Unlike individual therapy, you’re quickly forced to navigate the nuances and attachment styles of two entirely different partners—who come to you with unique experiences, emotional wounds and deep traumas.
The hard reality is that, even though many of us have poured countless hours and money into traditional education, additional training courses or devoured all kinds of research studies, books and articles…
….we’re often missing a proven framework to take all that theoretical knowledge and learning and apply it to our clinical work.
We need the kind of skills, interventions and techniques that can be individualized for any relational therapy.
What if you could draw from attachment theory to help clients heal from trauma & restore intimacy?
- Research suggests that as much as 90% of conflict and issues that arise in adult relationships can be traced back to early attachment experiences.
- Not only does attachment theory give us a framework to understand how the past shapes our present relationships, it gives us a practical approach to address deep-rooted patterns, no matter how complex.
- All of us are capable of repairing broken connections. Because humans are not wired to live in isolation, we’re also not wired to heal in isolation. That’s why your clients can’t do this alone.
- Every couple in an intimate relationship deserves to experience joy and intimacy. And when you have the right tools and clinical strategies, you can help couples to find a loving connection.
Intimate relationships can be tricky to navigate.
Help your clients get the most out of therapy as they move towards a more loving and secure connection.
To Help Couples Form Secure Attachment, We must…
- Develop greater awareness and attunement so you can facilitate trust and safer conversations to repair communication breakdowns with greater empathy and compassion.
- Implement proven techniques that empower you to tailor clinical sessions to best honor each partner’s specific needs, so you can restore healing in your intimate relationships.
- Teach your clients empowering language so they can resolve conflict with their loved ones and promote repair.
- Learn how to work from a place of secure attachment yourself, so you have greater confidence you can stay fully present and attuned to the needs and language of different attachment style dynamics.
- Integrate a structured framework into your clinical practice so you can uncover the root cause of relational trauma more effectively and efficiently and establish trust.
- Better understand the neurobiology of attachment and how we create new patterns, habits and facilitate secure attachment.
“The healing I received is still such a blessing to me. I have so much confidence in my life and am free from the burden of needing acceptance from others. The anger has mostly dissipated and I have a lot of joy. I have spent time over the last 4+ years growing that confidence and becoming a better wife and mother. We are in a beautiful place!”

ATTACHMENT & TRAUMA THERAPY FOR ADULT RELATIONSHIPS
Gain practical tools and clinical skills so you an promote secure connection for couples in intimate relationships
Led by Dr. Terry Levy and Dr. Diane Poole Heller
Here’s what we’ll cover in the next 5 months
Includes practical demonstrations, tools and strategies you can integrate into your clinical practice to strengthen your skills and improve your effectiveness when working with couples in a therapeutic setting.
All LIVE monthly sessions meet online for 90 minutes on
Tuesdays at 1 pm ET / 11 am MT / 10 am PT
MONTH 1: June 21, 2022
Changing the Dance: Shifting Unhealthy Relationship Patterns
Thomas was raised with a father who was angry, physically abusive and emotionally unavailable. While Thomas’ partner, Manny, felt loved growing up—he never learned how to communicate his emotions or manage relationship conflict constructively. The two have been a couple for 25 years. Over time, they’ve become increasingly distant emotionally and have withdrawn from one another. They argue frequently and are both distressed about the state of their marriage.
In this month’s training, you’ll learn how to use Attachment Communication Training (ACT) as a guided framework to help couples listen empathetically and communicate more openly—which in turn, re-establishes trust and safety to lead to greater compassion, honesty, connection and healing.
- Learn how the 4 early attachment adaptations learned in early childhood continue to affect adult relationship patterns.
- Understand which strategies stimulate better communication and strengthen secure attachment skills to resolve emotional wounds rooted in insecure attachment adaptations.
- Learn how to use the “Life Script,” an attachment assessment tool that uncovers rich information about your clients’ past and present life experiences.
- Integrate ACT into your clinical work and use this structured framework to teach and guide clients on how to promote healthier dynamics in their intimate relationships.
MONTH 2: July 19, 2022
Treatment Strategies for Insecure Attachment Styles
As a child, Bill experienced physical and emotional abuse from his father, while his mother failed to protect him. As a result, he developed an adult avoidant attachment pattern, so he now withdraws from his wife, Tanya, whenever there is conflict or she shows “too much emotion.”
Tanya also experienced abuse as a child—as a teenager, she developed an anxious attachment style, showing symptoms of severe depression and an eating disorder.
In this training, you’ll learn how to use the “Life Script” assessment to uncover family-of-origin information to get to the root of your clients’ relationship issues more quickly, as well as use psychodramatic reenactments—like role play—to change core beliefs, re-establish trust and strengthen secure attachment skills.
- Learn the 5 components of experiential therapy and how these interventions can facilitate healing of emotional wounds to shift unhealthy core beliefs.
- Help clients shift their internal working model to reduce self-blame and increase self-esteem and confidence.
- Work with highly reactive clients to address buried trauma, so they can access secure attachment skills, learn to self-regulate and find relief from suffering.
- Learn how to bring your clients out of their automatic threat response and instead, practice mature prosocial coping strategies that expand their capacity for intimacy and connection.
MONTH 3: August 16, 2022
Victim to Thriver: Resilience After Trauma
Teresa had a complex history of trauma, abuse and neglect. Consequently, she developed symptoms of depression, experiencing suicidal ideation and dissociation that often became exacerbated conflict in her marriage to Matt.
You’ll see how experiential interventions helped Teresa address her trauma and repair emotional wounds. In turn, Teresa began to feel more confident and accepting of herself, which improved her connection with Matt.
In this month’s training, Dr. Levy will show which experiential interventions to use with highly traumatized adults to facilitate the transition from “victim” to “overcomer”—including new strategies that foster resilience and post-traumatic growth.
- Analyze underlying and complex patterns that stem from highly traumatic childhood experiences.
- Move clients away from passive threat reactions toward active, self-protective responses.
- Discover which emotional processes release neuro-chemicals that promote calmness, regulation and stimulate early security and relational connection.
- Understand why (and how) many of us continue to repeat patterns from the past in our present until we recognize and repair the original relational wound.
MONTH 4: September 20, 2022
The Neurobiology of Relational Trauma
As a child, Sherry was physically abused by her father, who was volatile and highly critical. At the same time, Sherry’s mother was weak, passive and frightened—failing to protect Sherry from the abuse. As an adult, Sherry avoided closeness in her marriage to Kate, often becoming angry and critical.
Kate on the other hand, had a father who was emotionally detached and unavailable—while her mother was judgmental and critical. She shamed Kate for her sexuality and gender identity. Inevitably, Kate adapted and learned to cope with any signs of discord by avoiding the disagreement entirely.
In this month’s training, you’ll learn how to help your clients lower their defense mechanisms and become more emotionally available to resolve attachment wounds, manage conflict more effectively (and proactively) and improve relational bonds.
- Learn the different structures of the brain—and how our social and emotional experiences in childhood affect both the neurobiology and biochemistry of adult brains.
- Discover how we can utilize our brain’s innate plasticity to “re-wire” the traumatized brain and develop new patterns, habits and a shift toward a more secure attachment style.
- Resolve emotional issues and conflict in adults who are detached and shut down due to traumatic life experiences.
- Better understand the psychological, physical and emotional toll that trauma can have on both the body and the mind.
MONTH 5: October 11, 2022
Strengthening Secure Attachment
Leah was raised in a non-emotional family that valued achievements over relationships. As an adult, she developed an avoidant attachment style—often becoming critical, judgmental or dismissive with her husband, John.
As a child John experienced severe childhood abuse and emotional neglect, consequently developing an anxious attachment style, which prompted him to withdraw from Leah as a form of self-protection.
In this training, you’ll see how Leah and John grew more attuned relationally and developed new, secure attachment skills within the safety of a nurturing therapeutic environment.
- Learn the importance of establishing a therapeutic “contract” to improve engagement, develop motivation and hold both partners accountable.
- Identify how secure attachment is defined within an intimate relationship.
- Learn which strategies and skills you can practice to help support couples as they move towards secure attachment.
- Understand how to integrate new interventions with existing modalities to help couples create a sense of safety and trust, so they become a secure base for each other.
- Guide and teach clients to manage conflict and communicate more constructively using the Attachment Communication Training (ACT) Tool.

Frequently Asked Questions
How can we help you?
No, you do not. While most of the people who join the Therapy Mastermind Circle membership are both novices and experienced practitioners, we do sometimes have non-therapists join us as we explore a variety of in-depth topics on a monthly basis.
Due to the experiential teaching and private nature of the client demonstrations in this particular cohort, however, we highly encourage non-therapists who choose to join us to have therapeutic support in place before joining.
Please note that the material covered in our monthly modules is never meant as a substitute for therapy. If you are currently working with a mental health professional, we encourage you to invite them to join this program as well.
Both. Each monthly live session will be streamed live via Zoom online on Tuesdays at 11 am MT. Additionally, you’ll be able to submit questions each week and during the live session, which includes time for Q&A.
Monthly teaching material has been pre-recorded by Dr. Terry Levy and Dr. Diane Poole Heller so that you may review it at your own pace in your personal learning portal.
You have lifetime access to your learning dashboard and materials for every 6-month topic you complete, including videos, transcripts, worksheets, exercises, demos and bonuses. You may also download, print or save the materials at any time to your professional reference library.
If you cancel your membership to Therapy Mastermind Circle before completing the current 6-month topic, you will have 30 days—from the time you give notice of your cancellation—to download the materials for personal use.
In the interest of privacy, client demo videos may NEVER be downloaded.
We would love to you to join each session live, but if you are unable to do so, all sessions (including the Q&A) are recorded, so you can still receive all the information and coaching you need.
Additionally, the program materials (including audio recordings, video recordings and transcript from each session) are yours to download and keep in your professional reference library. This will be useful for some sessions that you will want to listen to or watch more than once.
The only thing you cannot download are client demos—because we need to honor and respect client confidentiality.
We’re also here to support you in our private Facebook Group. It’s a great place to ask questions, share insights and get support from Diane, Terry and your colleagues.
The time most people spend varies because of individual learning styles and preferences. Most of our students tell us they spend an average of 2-3 hours per module (per month) outside of our 90-minute LIVE monthly sessions.
We also encourage everyone to work at your own pace—and at the very least, join us for the interactive sessions and demos, so we can answer your questions live.
