Deconstructing Anxiety

A Practical Model for Healing and Integration

Learn how to identify the true source of anxiety—then transform it.

This integrative training combines structured diagnostic tools with somatic and attachment-based practices to help clients resolve anxiety at its root.

Includes 9 live calls with teaching, experiential exercises and optional community breakout groups!

Why Do So Many Clients Stay Stuck in Anxiety—Even After Years of Therapy?

As therapists, we’re trained to recognize the symptoms of anxiety. Racing thoughts. Restlessness. Panic. Avoidance. And we’re equipped with techniques to help clients manage those symptoms.

But what do we do when the anxiety doesn’t budge? What about the clients who understand their triggers—who’ve tried CBT, mindfulness, somatic tools—and still feel hijacked by fear?

Even structured, evidence-based methods like CBT, somatic therapies, or mindfulness can fall short when they address only the surface of anxiety—without resolving its source.

That’s where the Deconstructing Anxiety model begins.

Developed by clinical psychologist Dr. Todd Pressman, this model helps you identify the core fear underlying a client’s anxiety—one of five universal fears that shape how we respond to life—and the defensive strategies that keep that fear hidden and unresolved.

When these patterns are revealed, they can be changed.

You’ll learn how to quickly assess the fear/defense dynamic in your clients, guide them toward dismantling it through direct experience, and support them as they reclaim a sense of agency and clarity.

This model doesn’t just reduce symptoms. It helps clients understand what their anxiety is really trying to say.

Because when we stop seeing anxiety as the enemy…

We can begin to work with it as a guide.

“All defenses backfire—they create more of the fear they were supposed to protect us from. Facing the fear dispels it.”

– Dr. Todd Pressman

Discover a Practical, Transformational Framework for Working with Anxiety

The next 6-month topic in our annual membership series:

Deconstructing Anxiety

A Practical Model for Healing and Integration

Featuring Dr. Todd Pressman and Dr. Diane Poole Heller—two master clinicians offering distinct but complementary approaches to resolving anxiety at its source.

Dr. Pressman brings a structured, core fear-based model rooted in psychodynamic theory, while Dr. Heller offers an attachment-informed, somatic approach to trauma healing. Together, they provide a dynamic, integrative training experience you won’t find anywhere else.

Here’s What We’ll Cover In The Next 6 Months

Includes LIVE teaching with Q&A, guided group experiential exercises with Dr. Todd Pressman, and live demonstrations (with debriefs) from Dr. Diane Poole Heller.

Together, they’ll guide you through a comprehensive journey—from identifying the
five core fears at the heart of anxiety, to integrating somatic and attachment-based
tools for healing trauma held in the body.

All LIVE monthly sessions meet online for 2 hours (dates and times listed below)

SESSION 1: Tuesday, May 20, 2025 @ 11 am-1 pm MT

Laying the Foundation: The Theory of Deconstructing Anxiety

With Dr. Todd Pressman

In this opening session, Dr. Todd Pressman will introduce the foundational theory behind the Deconstructing Anxiety model, setting the stage for the transformational work ahead. You’ll explore how anxiety—and the suffering it produces—can be traced to one of five core fears, and how the defensive strategies we create to avoid these fears often end up reinforcing them.

Through live teaching and experiential group work, you’ll begin to identify the core psychological drives that shape your clients’ experience of fear and resistance. You’ll also be introduced to three powerful approaches for dismantling fear-based patterns—tools that will anchor the rest of the course.

This session will give you a clear, teachable framework to begin working with clients at the source of their anxiety, and will prepare you to integrate future techniques with confidence and clarity.

SESSION 2: Tuesday, June 17, 2025 @ 11 am-1 pm MT

Exercises for Diagnosis: “Digging for Gold” and “Who Are You Really?”

With Dr. Todd Pressman

In this session, you’ll begin applying the Deconstructing Anxiety model through two transformative diagnostic exercises. These tools help uncover the hidden fears and defense strategies that shape clients’ anxious patterns—often more quickly than traditional assessment methods.

Through live teaching and experiential practice, you’ll learn how to guide clients (and yourself) into recognizing which of the five core fears is most active beneath their anxiety. You’ll also gain insight into how defensive patterns form in layers—and how to distinguish primary defenses from those that merely mask deeper dynamics.

By the end of this session, you’ll have two client-ready tools you can immediately begin using in therapy to access what’s really driving the anxiety beneath the surface.

SESSION 3: Tuesday, July 15, 2025 @ 11 am-1 pm MT

Exercises for Transformation: The Alchemist

With Dr. Todd Pressman

In this session, you’ll be introduced to The Alchemist—the first of the core transformative exercises in the Deconstructing Anxiety method. This powerful technique initiates the process of “Doing the Opposite of the Chief Defense”—a principle designed to help clients face their fear directly, rather than avoiding it through protective strategies.

You’ll experience the exercise firsthand and learn how to guide clients through it step by step. You’ll also explore the common types of resistance that arise as clients move closer to transformation—and discover a four-part method for working through these internal blocks with compassion and skill.

By the end of this session, you’ll have a potent tool for helping clients shift from fear-based patterns to a state of greater clarity, presence, and personal power.

SESSION 4: Tuesday, July 22, 2025 @ 11 am-1 pm MT

Trauma Stops Time: Releasing Encapsulated Anxiety

With Dr. Diane Poole Heller

In this session, Dr. Diane Poole Heller explores how trauma distorts our sense of time—leaving parts of us emotionally “frozen” at the moment of impact. These dissociated, unresolved fragments of self can quietly generate anxiety for months or even years after the original event.

While Dr. Pressman’s model helps us trace anxiety to core fears and defenses, Diane’s work reveals how those fears may become lodged in the nervous system, held outside of time, and experienced as ever-present danger. Through clinical case studies and live demonstrations, you’ll learn how to identify and work with these “encapsulated child” parts—and help clients release what’s been stuck for years.

You’ll walk away with somatic tools and time-based interventions that support clients in moving through traumatic memory—not just around it—and opening a path to resolution and reintegration.

SESSION 5: Tuesday, August 12, 2025 @ 11 am-1 pm MT

Exercises for Transformation: The Witness

With Dr. Todd Pressman

In this session, you’ll be introduced to The Witness—the second core transformative exercise in the Deconstructing Anxiety method. Building on the foundation of The Alchemist, this technique helps clients develop the capacity to observe their fear and defenses with calm, non-reactive awareness.

The Witness creates the conditions for lasting change by teaching clients how to unhook from automatic fear responses and shift into presence. You’ll explore multiple ways to “do the opposite” of the chief defense within a single, integrated process—and learn how to support clients through the resistance that often arises when stepping into freedom.

Through guided experiential group exercises, practice, and real-time reflection, you’ll develop deeper skill in guiding clients out of anxiety loops and into grounded, empowered clarity.

SESSION 6: Tuesday, August 19, 2025 @ 11 am-1 pm MT

From Helplessness to Empowerment: Transforming Defensive Responses in Anxiety

With Dr. Diane Poole Heller

In this powerful session, Dr. Diane Poole Heller explores how unresolved defensive responses—those protective impulses that were never completed—can trap clients in cycles of helplessness and fear. Left unaddressed, these incomplete responses stay active in the nervous system, fueling persistent anxiety even when the threat is long gone.

Through compelling clinical examples, Diane will show how somatic and attachment-informed tools can help clients renegotiate these stuck patterns. You’ll learn how to guide clients through somatic reprocessing techniques that restore agency and shift the internal narrative from passive overwhelm to active empowerment.

Whether you’re working with trauma-related anxiety, social phobia, or chronic shutdown, this session gives you body-based interventions that reconnect clients to their strength, voice, and capacity for choice.

SESSION 7: Tuesday, September 2, 2025 @ 11 am-1 pm MT

Exercises for Transformation: Warrior’s Stance and Resisting Resistance

With Dr. Todd Pressman

In this advanced session, you’ll learn two of the most powerful tools in the Deconstructing Anxiety method—The Warrior’s Stance and Resisting Resistance. These techniques help clients face their defenses head-on while cultivating a meta-awareness that transforms even the subtlest patterns of avoidance.

You’ll discover how The Warrior’s Stance empowers clients to challenge fear-based perceptions with clarity and strength, while Resisting Resistance offers a gentler path for noticing, naming, and dissolving the moment resistance begins to form.

Together, these exercises give you a versatile framework for helping clients transform anxiety at both the behavioral and cognitive levels—and move into greater alignment with their deepest values and intentions.

SESSION 8: Tuesday, September 9, 2025 @ 11 am-1 pm MT

Decoding the Body’s Language: Unraveling Phobias and Mysterious Anxiety Patterns

With Dr. Diane Poole Heller

In this session, Dr. Diane Poole Heller takes us deep into the mystery of “irrational” fears—phobias, odd triggers, and elusive anxiety symptoms that often baffle both client and clinician. Rather than dismissing these patterns as random or exaggerated, you’ll learn how to listen to the body’s symbolic language and uncover the hidden trauma it may be trying to express.

Diane introduces a trauma-informed “detective mindset” that helps clinicians track subtle somatic clues—like gestures, imagery, or odd phobic reactions—to their origins in unprocessed or misattributed memory. With care and precision, you’ll learn how to guide clients in revisiting these experiences safely, distinguishing accurate traumatic memories from constructed explanations that once served a protective purpose.

This session offers an integrative way to work with clients whose anxiety seems vague, mysterious, or “about nothing”—and gives you the tools to follow the thread back to resolution and repair.

SESSION 9: Tuesday, October 7, 2025 @ 11 am-1 pm MT

Vision Questing

With Dr. Todd Pressman

This final session brings everything together.

Now that you’ve identified the five core fears, traced their defenses, practiced transformational techniques, and explored how trauma lives in the body—what comes next?

Vision Questing is the integrative capstone of the Deconstructing Anxiety model. In this session, you’ll learn how to guide clients—and yourself—into a future defined not by fear, but by purpose, clarity, and fulfillment.

This isn’t about returning to a pre-anxious state. It’s about evolving into a deeper, truer way of being—one that transcends defensive survival patterns and invites a life lived with conscious intention.

Through guided experiential group exercises, experiential practice, and reflection, you’ll build a personal and clinical framework for continuing this work far beyond this course.

Diane Poole Heller PhD, is an internationally recognized speaker, author, and teaching expert in the field of adult attachment theory and trauma resolution.

Her signature approach—DARe (Dynamic Attachment Re-patterning experience)—provides therapists and individuals with relevant skills and practical exercises that facilitate healing from attachment and trauma wounds.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can we help you?

No you do not. While most of the people who join the Therapy Mastermind Circle membership are both novices and experienced practitioners, we do sometimes have non-therapists join us as we explore a variety of in-depth topics on a monthly basis.

Since this particular cohort includes live demos, small group breakout sessions and experiential teaching, we do encourage any non-therapists who choose to join us to have therapeutic support in place, as the material covered during our time together is not meant as a substitute for therapy. If you are currently working with a mental health professional, we encourage you to invite them to join this program as well.

This topic is highly relevant for psychologists, therapists, and other mental health and behavioral professionals such as life coaches, bodywork practitioners, counselors, who work with clients and patients in a professional or clinical setting—and who need additional tools and skills to address the complexities of unresolved trauma and attachment disruptions, or who need a safe space to share and practice new skills.

Each session will be streamed live via Zoom online (see curriculum for scheduled dates). Additionally, you’ll be able to submit questions each week through the private course portal and during the live monthly session, which always includes time for Q&A.

Every call will be recorded and stored inside the private course portal, so you may review it at your own pace. However, we highly recommend you attend live so you don’t miss the live teaching and demos.

Therapy Mastermind Circle is an annual membership program where we meet monthly to explore relevant topics, share expert learning, and develop practical skills to help you and your clients thrive. If you cancel at any time and rejoin the program at a later date or topic—monthly rates may be subject to change.

We would love to have you join each session live, but if you are unable to do so, that’s ok—all sessions and training calls (including the Q&A and demos) are recorded and stored in your professional reference library, so you can still receive the information and coaching you need.

Additionally, the program materials (including audio recording, video recordings and transcript from each session) are yours to download and keep in your professional reference library. In the interest of privacy, demo videos may never be downloaded.
